What Are Major Causes Of Infertility In Women?

by Lisa Olson on December 7, 2009

Understanding the major causes of infertility in women is very important. While there are many reasons that lead to this sad state of affairs, but one huge reason is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease that is also known as PID. This is caused by many bacteria’s that cause infections and that too in the reproductive organs, appendix and also the intestine, particularly the region that is in the pelvic area. But what is worst is that, the infection also affects the fallopian tubes and when this happens it is bad news indeed because the tubes are very important for pregnancy. This condition is known as salpingitis.

Here are the infections that cause PID and their reasons…

* Did you know that in a vast majority of cases (75%) a woman becomes infertile because of an infection that is caused by the Chlamydia Trachomatis, which incidentally is itself an STD or Sexually Transmitted Disease? This infection affects the fallopian tubes. Then there are quite a few cases of Gonorrhea too that also affects many women. The saddest thing is, in most cases these incidents are overlooked or they remain un-diagnosed till it is already too late.

* Pelvic Tuberculosis is also often caused by PID. Alarmingly it now seems that there are more cases of Pelvic Tuberculosis, particularly in developing countries.

* Many women go in for abortions at dubious places where the conditions are not even hygienic and this can also cause PID.

* When the appendix ruptures it can also cause PID and so can the herpes virus.

There are also many cases of Endometriosis that also is responsible for making the woman infertile. But it also needs to be mentioned that Endometriosis may not alone be responsible, rather, it works as a contributory factor that leads to this condition.

The list of major causes of infertility in women would not be complete if we do not include Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS in it. When the woman is suffering from this, her ovaries are making a large number of androgens (the male hormone) and because of this increased presence, it leads to the higher LH level and lower FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) level. This is a sad state indeed as when this happens, the follicles become unable to make the eggs. And when the follicles are not working to make eggs, they become full of a kind of fluid which ultimately leads to cyst formation. One cyst leads to another quite often and as a result, the ovaries swell up and begin to appear like a grapefruit. There is another side effect – when the woman is not ovulating, the production of progesterone also gets halted but on the other hand, the estrogen level remains high. Because of the high levels of androgen, the woman gains weight, develop acne and facial hair to, and you can blame all this on PCOS.

Premature Ovarian Failure known simply as POF also causes infertility in women. Known clinically as Early Menopause, this sets in when the follicles stop making eggs even before she has turned 40, and popularly this is referred to as premature menopause. This is very sad indeed as how can the woman remain productive when she is not even making the eggs?

Though frankly this is quite rare, but Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism is also known to have made a few women infertile. When this happens, the quality of both the FSH and the LH are poor and due to this, the ovaries cannot function properly. There is hardly a remedy for this as modern science does not even know why this happens.

There is a condition in which the woman does not menstruate and it is referred to as Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea or simply as FHA which also affects the fertility. This happens because of the fact that the thyroid gland and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system is not stable which contributes to regulating the reproductive system and also other bodily functions.

Two very rare cases Implantation Failure and Benign Uterine Fibroids are caused by the Luteal Phase Defect are also responsible for infertility in women. And there are some allied problems of this as well. But these problems can be cured by some timely intervention from holistic remedies.

Yes it seems that holistic treatments work best in the major causes of infertility in women. Rather than just suggest assisted methodologies which is what conventional remedies do, the holistic approach finds out the main cause and then suggests the right remedy that can range from Chinese medications, acupuncture, herbs, exercise and change in the lifestyle too. Conventional treatments fail most often and there are side effects too – holistic remedies are indeed best for female infertility.
